Training and Development of Employees in Apparel Industry

In the contemporary business world,  the apparel industry is one of the main industries that drive the national economy, therefore developing employees and aligning their performance towards organizational strategic goals is critical.  It is important to transform human resources into a sustainable competitive advantage for organizations and training and development is one effective way to do this.

Employee  training  (ET)  identified as a  learning  experience that will transform employee’s behavior, attitudes, skills and abilities while equipping them with techniques and tools as well as strategies that enhance job performance (Hughey  & Mussnug,  1997).  Employee training focuses on career development of an employee and targets the requirements of future jobs, encouraging them to acquire and advanced skills and knowledge.

Employee  development  developing the  knowledge  and  skills  of  employees and preparing them for new responsibilities and challenges (Snell  &  Bohlander,  2010). This involves  enhancing an  individual’s  skills  for  future  responsibilities.

The Sri Lanka’s Joint Apparel Association Forum (JAAF) has launched a comprehensive training manual that encompasses that will help education providers to align their courses with the requirements of the apparel industry. The contemporary business world is dynamic and technological advanced, the apparel industry is also aligning with the world which means that employees must also be brought to speed.

The non-managerial employees mostly origin from poor economic backgrounds and therefore face many issues within their families and are not interested in developing their career. Therefore, there are many areas to be touched in the form of training and development.

·                The  primary focus on apparel organizations must be on enhancing employees’ motivation and transforming their perspectives on career development.

·                Equipping them with decision making and problem-solving skills to manage their personal life as well as career life.

·                Engaging them in Information Technology and English course trainings

·                Engaging them Personal Advancement & Career Enhancement (P.A.C.E.) program created to support women in the global apparel industry by Gap Inc.

·                Engaging them in Leadership trainings as well as technical skills.

The success of any organization depends on the  motivation,  engagement  and  willingness  of the  employees  to perform within  an  organization  which can be driven by training and development.
